How is Dengue spread
Dengue fever is a deadly disease spread via the dengue virus, which is transmitted through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It results in dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome which can be fatal. There are up to 4 different virus types of dengue, meaning that you may be infected up to 4 times in your life.
Once bitten by an infected Aedes mosquito, the infected person doesn’t show symptoms until after an incubation period of 4 to 7 days. This may worsen to a more severe stage where it can result in death, with no real treatment available. Dengue fever is not transmitted from person to person.
Dengue Fever Symptoms
Some symptoms include:- Sudden fever for 2 to 7 days
- Joint and muscle ache
- Headaches
- Rashes
- Nausea and vomiting
- Bleeding from the nose and gums or easy bruising of the skin
- More bleeding - bleeding from the gums and nose, internal bleeding, black stools
- Plasma leakage
While there is no specific treatment for dengue, the hospital may treat you with fluid and electrolyte replacement and blood transfusions, thus prevention is the best way to get ahead of this.
How to Prevent Dengue
One way to prevent dengue is going to the source, which is to stop mosquitoes from breeding. You can do by checking around your home for locations for clean, stagnant water and removing these pools of water.
Another way is to use insect repellent frequently, especially when going outdoors or during the evenings when you may be more prone to getting bitten by mosquitoes.
