Being in good physical health and well-being means that your bodily functions are working at their peak and at a reduced risk of becoming ill and diseased. Fortunately, there are health supplements that promote your general well-being and support your body before it succumbs to illness. Some of the areas these supplements focus on are:
- Balancing pH: With an increasing pH or alkalinity, the oxygen levels in your body increase, leading to a more resistant and healthy state.
- Antioxidants: Antioxidants neutralise free radicals in our body, which are waste substances when the body processes food and reacts to the environment. If the free radicals are not eliminated, they cause oxidative stress, which is linked to disease.
- Immune support: Taking additional supplements can help to maintain and prevent illness from occurring first.
- Dietary nutrients: Our poor modern diet ensures an insufficient intake of essential vitamins and minerals, causing us to consume dietary fibre and whole-based foods in the form of supplementation.
Health Supplements FAQs
Our supplements are almost all food based, i.e., it is not manufactured by putting synthetically made vitamins /minerals/ substances made in the lab but are literally made from food. We cite some examples below.
- Plum balls are made from plum and mountain yam
- Adam’s Claymin mineral supplements which contain 76 trace minerals are made from clay mined from the desert.
(Most mineral Health Supplements are made from synthetic minerals in the lab and combined). - Kombu balls are made from seaweed, plum etc.
Our Health Supplements are traditionally made the old fashion way, that do not contain chemical binders that are found in many modern-day Health Supplements (binders are chemicals that bind the materials together into a pill or tablet).
We also do not believe the natural food supplements should remain as intact as possible and not be overly processed so that it loses many of its natural nutrients. For example, some manufacturers of honey filter and remove the naturally occurring sugars from the honey citing that it will lead to diabetes. However, the natural sugars in honey promote healthy bacteria in the gut which is so important for a healthy immune system. Ultra-fine filtration also removes many of the beneficial propolis, pollen and other good stuff from the honey, rendering it less nutritive.
As the name implies, the purpose of Health Supplements is to supplement one’s diet, to restore what could be missing in the diet. While this is recommended due to severely depleted soils and chemically / genetically modified foods, one must still ensure taking a healthy diet, have 7 hours of sleep daily and avoid junk foods/ refined foods / sugars as much as possible.
All Health Supplements come under HSA. It is allowed for sale in Singapore as long as it does contain harmful chemicals / heavy metals not exceeding certain levels, and cannot claim to cure health illnesses.
Look out for your body signals: just like a car that is Low in petrol will light up the “empty” petrol tank light, your body also gives signals to you when something is wrong or missing certain nutrients. If you often fall sick, get headaches often, feel cold or have numbness in the body, it may be tell-tale signs that your body is lacking some nutrients or suffering from some side effects of long-term medication which may need to be addressed.
Simple test like hair analysis, iodine skin tests, or blood analysis can tell if you are deficient in certain minerals.
Look for Health Supplements that do not contain chemical binders or chemicals that may have other side effects: E.g., talc a common food additive found also in Health Supplements can be contaminated with asbestos, a cancer-causing agent. Some also argue that certain modern day chemical additives or binders (although regarded safe by authorities) may have long term side effects.
Study the naturally occurring nutrient levels in traditionally proven healthy diets/ foods to get an idea of what level of each nutrient one needs and not be too influenced by too much modern scientific studies which may only be based on short period of a few years. An example is to study what the traditional Japanese eat regularly so that they have healthy long lives. (Same for Chinese and other food cultures too that has proven good health for generations).
Health and immunity is a broad topic and influenced by many factors.
Some Health Supplements address lack of certain nutrients, which affects the function of key organs in the body, while others (like plum balls, or flat tummy probiotics) address more underlying problems such as gut bacterial imbalance, blood pH imbalance, indigestion, constipation etc. A healthy gut and probiotic (good Bacteria “army”) help to fight off the bad invading bacteria/ pathogens in the body.
