Apricots are believed to have originated from China and spread to many parts of the world, being cultivated for over 4000 years.
Apricot juice is commonly used to help infants and adults in constipation. It is also commonly consumed as dried fruit snack, being high in dietary fibre, sorbitol, phenolics, vitamin A, B-carotenoids (anti-oxidants) and minerals including potassium and copper (ash residue is approximately 3.5% by weight).
These, together with its other phyto-chemicals are believed to be involved their health giving properties like regulating functions of the brain and strengthening heart muscles, maintenance of a healthy bone and teeth structure, blood system. It is also known prevent anaemia and degenerative heart disease, high blood cholesterol, cataracts and arthritis. Recent research have found an inhibitor called chlorogenic acid in apricots which may offer protection from oxidative neuro-degeneration in Parkinson disease.
