For at least 5,000 years, figs have been used as food and medicine to treat a whole host of illness. It is the most mentioned fruit in the Bible and were used to save King Hezekiah’s life when he was on his death-bed afflicted with boil.
Traditionally, figs are boiled with water to treat colds, laryngitis (sore throat) and chronic bronchitis. Hot dressing made from boiling figs are great for boils and burn injuries. Figs eaten on an empty stomach have also been known to help “breakdown” kidney stones. Due to its high alkalinity, some have even advocated taking them to help those who want to quit smoking.
More recently, much research has shown that figs contain a wealth of nutrients: - The highest amount of dietary fibre and anti-cancer substances (polyphenols) compared to any other common dried or fresh fruit. They are also rich in minerals and contain cholesterol-lowering phytosterols. One serving of 40 grams meets 20% of total recommended daily intake (RDI) of fibre, 7% RDI potassium, 6% RDI calcium and 6% RDI of iron. The National Cancer Institute and National Research Council recommend eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day to help reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer.
Figs are fat-free, sodium-free and cholesterol-free. So feel free to enjoy them daily as a healthy snack (to satisfy a sweet tooth without adding fat). Use in salads to add some sweetness and fibre or scatter in muesli or oats for a healthy, zesty breakfast.
