Our Organic Pearled Barley is low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol-free, sodium-free and rich in dietary fibre providing 28 percent daily value (DV) per serving. According to the FDA, "Diets rich in whole grain foods, and other plant foods and low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers." Also, "Low-fat diets rich in fibre-containing grain products, fruits, and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancer, a disease associated with many factors.”, "Diets low in sodium may reduce the risk of hypertension or high blood pressure, a disease associated with many factors." It is also a good source of niacin (B3), phosphorus, and copper.
Our Organic Pearled Barley cooks quickly and its mild flavour and delightful chewy texture make it a wonderful complement to soups and stews. It can be combined with other whole grains such as rice and millet or cooked by itself as a whole grain, breakfast porridge, or used in making delicious, light grain salad. Pearled barley can also be cracked to make barley couscous, frequently used in the Middle Eastern countries. Our Organic Pearled Barley can also be freshly milled into flour for making bread and other baked goods.
Preparation: To cook Organic Pearled Barley first rinse under cold water. There is no need for soaking this quick-cooking grain. Just place in a heavy pot with a pinch of Sea Salt or a 1-inch piece of Kombu sea vegetable and 2 cups of water per cup of barley. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce the flame and simmer for 35 minutes until tender, light and fluffy. To pressure cook use 1 1/2 cups of water and cook for 15 to 20 minutes.
