A How-to Guide For Making Alkaline Water at Home

The alkaline water hype might be dying down, but it doesn’t seem to be going away soon. After all, the prospect of alkaline water, especially with its wide array of alleged health benefits (i.e. boosts metabolism, helps the body absorb nutrients, and reduces acid in the bloodstream), remains appealing to health-conscious consumers.

If you have never tried drinking alkaline water, but are curious about its medical properties, you might want to consider alkalizing or making alkaline water at home

Here are some easy steps you could follow to make alkaline water on a budget:

Making Alkaline Water At Home: How to Determine the Water’s pH Level

What mainly sets alkaline water apart from other types of water is its pH level. The ideal pH level of drinking water is 8 or 9, and this can be achieved through alkalizing the water. To determine the water’s pH level, follow these two-step processes:

  1. Prepare your pH kit. A pH kit contains pH strips and a pH color chart that will help you determine the water’s pH level. You can easily purchase a pH kit from a drug or health store.

  2. Test the water’s pH level. To test the water’s pH level, dip a pH strip into the water and let it sit for a while. Match the color of the strip with that on the pH color chart to determine the water’s pH level.

While water normally has a pH level of 7, it sometimes tends to be more acidic (i.e. its pH level is less than 7) due to impurities. Alkalizing the water will remove impurities and make it less acidic, thereby aiding in better water absorption by the cells.

From Tap Water to Alkaline Water: How to Alkalize

The various methods of alkalizing water can be classified into two main categories: through the use of water additives and through the use of filtration systems. We will discuss each one in greater detail.

1.       Using water additives.

Tap water can be turned into alkaline water by adding either alkaline-rich components or ingredients with anionic properties.

It must be noted, however, that while alkaline-rich additives (such as baking soda and pH drops) increase the alkalinity of the water, they do not filter out the impurities in the water, unlike chlorine and fluorine which can purify the water.

On the other hand, alkaline-rich additives turn tap water into alkaline water, prepping it for consumption. Ingredients with anionic properties (such as limes, lemons and other citrus fruits) induce a bodily reaction during digestion, making water alkaline.

2.       Using a filtration system.

A more effective, albeit more expensive way of alkalizing water is through the use of water filtration systems.

Among the most popular alkaline water filtration systems are the following: water ionizer, ionizing water filter, and reverse osmosis water filter.

These filtration systems vary in terms of portability and efficiency, and are made to suit different alkalinity requirements and budget limitations.

The health benefits of alkaline water remains widely disputed to date. The steps above will help you in making alkaline water at home so you can find out for yourself whether or not the hype is justified.

At Nature’s Glory Singapore, the HiFloAM Water® system uses water filtration technology to create alkaline water with properties similar to these "miracle" spring waters from France, Germany & Mexico -- a weak alkaline pH, high hydration ability, and the ability to remove free radicals. Compared to other alkaline water systems, our HiFloAM Water® filtration system aims to improve upon taste, higher in hydrogen and oxygen levels to help prevent free radical damage in cells and stronger antioxidant ability.

HiFloAM Water® is fully made in Japan, in a factory with Medical Standards ISO 13485 Certificate, which is considered much stricter and higher than ISO90001 quality standards, giving you peace of mind in your purchase.
