Why Families Choose Our Organic Fragrant Brown Rice
A good brown rice should be grown cleanly, stay fresh, and taste good enough that your family will happily eat it every week. Our Organic Fragrant Brown Rice is Grade A Hom Mali, the Thai variety better known as jasmine rice. The long grains cook up light and separate instead of heavy and sticky, with a gentle, nutty fragrance.
Is It Necessary to Buy Organic Brown Rice?
With brown rice, organic makes more of a difference than it does with white rice. The reason comes down to the bran.
In conventionally farmed rice, studies show that pesticide residues tend to collect in the outer layers of the grain: the husk and the bran. Polishing white rice strips the bran away, along with much of that residue. Brown rice keeps its bran, which is where much of its fibre and nutrients are found. So whatever was used on the farm is more likely to stay with the grain you cook.

Certified organic brown rice deals with this at the source, since synthetic pesticides are not used on the crop to begin with. We add our own checks on top of that:
- Independent laboratories test our products for pesticide residue, heavy metals, and microbes before they reach our shelves.
- Our warehouses are never fumigated. We rely on cold, dry storage instead.
You can read more about these checks on our 100% Organic Assurance page.
Looking for Brown Rice That Tastes Closer to White Rice?
No brown rice tastes exactly like white rice. The bran gives it a nuttier flavour and a firmer bite. Still, some types are far easier to get used to than others. Ours is brown Hom Mali (jasmine) rice, so it keeps much of the soft fragrance people love in white jasmine rice.
If your household is used to white rice, a few small changes help:
Start with a mix.
Cook it half and half with white rice, then shift the ratio over a few weeks. Soak the brown rice first so both cook evenly.
Soak before cooking.
Thirty minutes or more in water softens the grains and shortens the cooking time.
Try a pressure cooker.
Pressure cooking gives softer grains with a pleasant chew, and it’s the first method listed on our pack.
Pair it with saucy dishes.
Curries, braises, and stir-fries with plenty of gravy go especially well with its nutty taste.
How to Cook Our Organic Brown Rice
Brown rice needs a little more time than white rice, but the method is just as simple. These steps follow the instructions printed on our pack:
- Rinse the rice 2 to 3 times in cool water, then drain.
- Use 1 ½ cups of water for every cup of rice. For extra flavour, add a small piece of kombu or a pinch of sea salt.
- Cook it your way:
- Pressure cooker: cook on a low flame for about 45 minutes.
- Stovetop: bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat for about 50 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and keep the lid on for 10 minutes so the grains finish steaming.
Using a rice cooker? Soak the rice overnight first, with a few drops of our Brown Rice Vinegar, so it cooks more quickly.
How Do I Know If My Brown Rice Is Done Cooking?
The rice is ready when the water has been fully absorbed and the grains are tender, with a slight chew in the centre. A few grains may split open, and that’s normal. If the pot is dry but the rice still feels hard, add two or three tablespoons of hot water, cover, and cook on low heat for about five more minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to rinse organic brown rice before cooking?
Yes, a quick rinse is a good habit, even with organic rice. It washes off dust and loose bits picked up during milling and packing, and the cooked grains turn out less sticky. Two or three rinses in cool water is enough. There’s no need to rinse brown rice after cooking, though. That only leaves it soggy and bland.
Is it healthy to eat brown rice every day?
For most people, yes, as part of a balanced diet. Brown rice is a whole grain, and Singapore’s Health Promotion Board encourages swapping refined grains like white rice for whole grains like brown rice. Variety still matters. Rotating it with other whole grains, such as oats or quinoa, gives you a wider mix of nutrients.
Is brown rice a better choice for people with diabetes?
Brown rice generally has a medium glycemic index (GI) of about 68, compared with about 73 for white rice, though the exact figure varies with the variety and how it is cooked. That means it tends to raise blood sugar a little more gradually. Portion size and what you eat with it matter just as much, so pair it with vegetables, beans, or lean protein. If you are managing diabetes, ask your doctor or dietitian how much rice you should eat.
Is brown rice good if I am watching my weight?
Brown rice has about the same calories as white rice, so it is not a weight-loss food on its own. Its extra fibre can help a meal feel more satisfying, though. In sensible portions alongside plenty of vegetables, it fits naturally into a wholesome way of eating.
What should I look for in a good brown rice?
There is no single healthiest brown rice. Long-grain, short-grain, and fragrant types are all whole grains, and they differ mostly in texture and how they cook. What separates a good one from an average one is how it is grown and handled:
- Certified organic, with a named certifying body
- A clear best-before date, since the natural oils in the bran can go stale over time
- Sealed packaging that keeps out air and moisture
- A grain your household will enjoy eating regularly
How should I store brown rice after opening?
Move it into an airtight container once the pack is open. The bran contains natural oils that can turn stale with time, and Singapore’s warm climate can speed that up. Keeping opened rice in the fridge helps it stay fresh for longer.
