Manuka honey has become popular in Malaysia, with many wanting to consume this superfood daily. But what makes it so special? The reason is that it’s not just any honey -- it contains beneficial anti-bacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties that are so good for our health. It can also be used for treating wounds through topical applications.
However, finding the right kind of Manuka honey can be difficult in Malaysia. With so many brands to choose from, with all different types of ratings, quality and prices, how would you know which one to select?
Here’s our checklist of things to note before buying Manuka Honey in Malaysia:
Origin of Manuka Honey
Before buying the Manuka honey, do take a quick note of the source of the Manuka honey. As Manuka honey is harvested from the Leptospermum scoparium plant, it has a limited crop production season as it only flowers a few weeks out of the entire year. The Manuka plant is native to New Zealand and parts of Australia and the honey has to be harvested from a region that is abundant with Manuka plants. Oftentimes, these areas may be isolated and difficult to get to, thereby increasing the overall price of the honey.
Grading and Quality of Manuka Honey
Not all Manuka honeys are equal as well. The quality of your Manuka honey depends on the grading of the honey. There are 3 standard gradings for Manuka honey - Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), methylglyoxal (MGO) and Total Activity, which rate your honey on different criteria. UMF measures the key signature markers of Manuka honey - Leptosperin, Methylglyoxal(MGO) and Dihydroxyacetone. MGO measures the amount of MGO compounds found in the product, which are linked to Manuka’s beneficial health properties. Finally, Total Activity measures the degree of antibacterial activity of the Manuka honey compared to a standard disinfectant solution.
For all three, the higher the ratings of each, the higher will be the quality of the Manuka honey.
Reputation of Brand
Furthermore, purchasing your honey from an established retailer in Malaysia would be the best practice to ensure the quality of the Manuka honey. Look for businesses that have been around for a longer period of time, have loyal customers who can vouch for the quality and effectiveness of the product through reviews and get recommendations from your friends and family for good Manuka honey. This is done to ensure that you have the best choice and selection of genuine Manuka honey products from retailers.
Price
While price is one consideration when it comes to buying Manuka honey, it is not everything. As mentioned previously, Manuka honey is more expensive than most honeys due to its limited production. Thus, it is only natural that the price is generally high.
However, you may want to note that some honey brands have resorted to diluting or adulterating their honey in order to keep their costs low. In this case, the best solution is to go for certified organic honey to ensure the purity and source of your Manuka honey.
